More Than Sending a
Student Abroad
An EFI exchange is built around something simple but powerful: two students, two families, and one shared experience.
Your child is personally matched with an exchange partner abroad, and the two students complete the entire exchange together in both countries. Your child lives with their partner’s family abroad, sharing everyday family life, school, friendships, language and culture. Then, together, they come to your home, where that same student becomes part of your family and experiences life in your community.
The students do not simply trade places. They experience both sides of the exchange side by side, first as guest and host in one country, then reversing those roles in the other. Both students travel, both families host, and each student has the experience of welcoming their partner into their world while also becoming part of theirs.
But a successful exchange takes more than bringing two students and families together. EFI provides the structure that helps the experience thrive through reciprocity, full immersion, thoughtful matching, preparation and ongoing support.
The True Meaning of a Reciprocal Exchange
EFI exchanges are built around reciprocity. Each student has the opportunity to both host and travel, allowing two families to share the experience from both sides.
Unlike one-way homestays or programs where students live primarily with other international students, EFI places students directly into family life. Both families are personally invested in the exchange, supporting the students, sharing responsibility and welcoming each child as part of the family.
This shared commitment creates a stronger foundation for full immersion, meaningful relationships and connections that often continue long after the exchange ends.
Full Immersion
EFI exchanges are designed around full immersion. Students do not simply visit another country. They step into everyday life by living with their exchange family, attending school (where applicable), joining activities, meeting friends and becoming part of the local community.
Language develops naturally through real conversations, routines and shared experiences rather than through classroom learning alone. As students learn to communicate, adapt and participate in a new environment, they build confidence, independence and a much deeper understanding of another culture.
Full immersion is what transforms an exchange from a trip abroad into the experience of truly living somewhere else.
Matching
A successful exchange starts with the right match. EFI looks beyond age and destination to understand each student and family as individuals, considering personality, interests, family dynamics, lifestyle, goals, readiness and exchange preferences.
Our matching process is designed to create compatibility on both sides. Families review a proposed match, learn about one another and have the opportunity to connect before moving forward.
The goal is not to find two students who are exactly alike, but to create a pairing with trust, connection, shared experiences and a positive family relationship throughout the exchange.

Student well-being is at the centre of every EFI exchange. Through thoughtful preparation, regular check-ins and ongoing guidance, EFI stays closely connected with students and families throughout the experience.
