How does full immersion work on our programs?

Speaking a language gives you The key to a culture and its people
Students are able to speak their native language for the first 7-10 days in order to show the family their personality and to ask questions. After ten days the student is expected to not speak their native language and to use the target language exclusively. Families help students learn words and build sentences and during this time the student is hyper-aware of language. Their brain is fully open and searching for understanding. Within two months a student with no language skills in their target language is able to hold a simple conversation and understand most of what is being said in class. For students that come to an exchange from an immersion school or with some knowledge of the language, the first two months can still be challenging as they learn to speak at a faster pace, using modern vocabulary and colloquialisms, and deepening their understanding of the language.

While language immersion is the primary focus of our exchanges, it is only one of the many benefits of being immersed in a new culture. Living with a family gives a student the first-hand perspective of their new culture and customs. Simple things like sharing meals, attending school, and participating in activities allow students to appreciate their new life. Cultural immersion is a unique experience that can open doors to a deeper understanding.
